Things To Know Before Buying A Camel

If you are neither a dog nor a cat person, you should know that although camels can make excellent companion animals, they are still livestock and not lapdogs. Dromedary camels can have a long life, up to 40 years – this means that they are a commitment.

First, you should decide what type of camel you want, a dromedary (one-humped) or a Bactrian (two-humped). Here are 7 main differences between these two camel types.

A camel in the USA usually costs $4,500-$25,000, but do not buy the first camel you see. Take your time in making a decision.

Camels are better off in pairs, so consider purchasing two animals, if you do not have any at home. You may have owned other large animals such as horses, cows, etc., but camels are unique, require a unique way of training and handling, and simply cannot be compared to any other animal.

They are also big animals that require a lot of space, at least 2 acres per individual, as experts recommend. You will also need a pasture with strong fences and a three-walled shelter for the animal to sleep in

Keep in mind that you will need to spend on food, equipment, grooming, vaccinations, and specialized vet care – this might cost you over $2,000 a year, depending on the region and the camel breed.

When looking at the animal in person, stand behind the camel and watch it walk, checking the gait for irregularities, and also the hump. Examine how the animal sits and stands back up – the motion should be smooth and fluid.

Also, check the camel’s skin and mouth for any sores and examine its webbed feet for any open wounds.

You should always buy camels from reputable breeders and keep in mind that good breeders spend a lot on the nutrition and care of an animal – this will add to the longevity of your animal but also the price.

A good idea would be to pay a little bit more for a trained camel that is well-conformed, rather than getting the cheapest one.

Despite their rough and intimidating appearance, camels are usually very timid, gentle, and friendly creatures. They are known to share a great bond with humans and other animals – camels can make rewarding and amazing pets for owners if given enough care, space, and time.

Final Thoughts

And there you have it! 3 places where you can purchase your next camel in Texas.

Make sure to call (at reasonable hours) and check if the seller currently has camels available for sale, see the animal in person, or request a video call verification, before paying for anything in advance.

Compared to other exotic pets, camels are a bit more expensive to own and care for. When selecting one, take your time in picking a healthy and well-trained animal.
